Lake Winnipesaukee, NH

Natural beauty, outdoor recreation, and comfortable lodging - those were the elements we sought out in a 10th anniversary trip, and we found them in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. Our travels to Jackson and the White Mountains for skiing and biathlon took us past Lake Winnipesaukee many times. It’s an impressively large (and deep, as we’ve read) glacial lake with several towns along its shores. The house was located in Center Harbor (very small), one town away from Meredith (less small), and it sealed the deal for us with its incredible architecture, calming interior, and private setting on the lake.

After our boat cruise, it was time to take out the kayaks. One problem: we came to find that they’d blown off the dock during some rain/wind that had come through the previous night. Luckily, Ryan spotted them further down the shore, so we mounted a rescue mission. Remind us to tell you the story.

We made friends with this chipmunk, who was constantly scurrying back and forth between the forest and a burrow on the edge of the garden.

I have it from a trusted source that this is Orange Peel Fungus. I have it from another trusted source that it is edible. We didn’t try it, though.

Ryan has firm intentions to acquire these two pieces of land and connect them with a drawbridge.

We drove north toward our old stomping grounds and took the cog railway to the top of Mt. Washington. It is the tallest peak in the Northeast, at 6,288 ft. It’s a 45 min ride each way, with an hour at the top.

On the right is the observatory, where a team of meteorologists and scientists works year-round. Normally you can spend some time there during the hour at the top, but it had closed for the season the weekend before our trip.

We finally got the bikes out, and ended up doing a 24 mile ride, round-trip on the Cotton Valley Rail Trail. Clocked in at 2h 47min.

If Ryan looks like he’s forcing a smile, it’s because he is - 24mi was a bit much.

#27 That's a beautiful minimalist shot, quite Japanese in feel.

#12 It's all about your source. Or sauce if you decide to cook em.
