documenta is an international exhibition of modern and contemporary art which takes place every five years in Kassel, Germany. dOCUMENTA (13) is its thirteenth edition from 9 June until 16 September 2012. the exhibition in Kassel is presented at eight main venues, with further projects located at various sites throughout the center of the city

initiator of the first documenta in 1955 was art professor and curator Arnold Bode from Kassel. on the first exhibition Bode wanted to show the works of those artists which had been known as “Entartete Kunst” in Germany during the nazi era: fauvism, expressionism, cubism, futurism, abstract art, etc. over time the focus shifted to contemporary art

thanks for your story, DD. i still remember the reaction and the disapproval of my dad (your gramma’s generation :/) when he was confronting with contemporary art. perhaps his uncompromising rigidity helped my rebelling soul to get close to eccentric ideas from dadaism to modern music. what i am looking for is not always a meaning or message coming from the artist, not a complete understanding of a product(ion), rather it is an opportunity and call for contemplation over creativity, the motives and the changing forms

I remember well being 25 years old and going to an art museum with my future husband and his grandmother. When we got to the modern art section she would look curiously at each painting and wonder aloud what it was a painting OF. Now it seems the cycle has come back around only this time I am the old lady wondering.... 8^)

But I like your photo triptych none the less.... far more interesting than the art itself.

my problem with contemporary art is that it tells me too little and decorates too much. but then again, i'm a total art slob and have no idea whatsoever what these guys and dolls are up to. i hope something good.

as for the dark chapter of the nazis and their "entartete kunst" - this is always quoted as one of their most vile characteristics, as if it would say something about these bastards that they didn't like kokoschka, beckmann, grosz or dix. i think it doesn't. all these artists were massively opposed to the nazi's ideals and martial aesthetics and goebbels & co. just weaved a (theoretically very weak) ideology around these utterly different artists to fight their influence on the intellectuals of that time. i am glad that the documenta proves every time how alive and kicking modern art still is and hopefully always be; because it takes a lot of courage to put up these signs of difference in a world full of functional, commercial "visual design".
