"Vliedbergen" are earthen hills, although sometimes there are only slight elevations left in the landscape. They were built as residential mounds from the 11th century. In later centuries, defensive towers - motte castles - were often built on it. At the end of the 12th century, Zeeland had hundreds of Vliedbergen; now there are about forty left.
