The 32 km long northern part of the Apeldoorn Canal from Apeldoorn to Hattem was constructed in the years 1825-1829 and connected Apeldoorn with the rest of the Netherlands via a shipping route. The canal fulfilled an important function for the supply of raw materials for more than 60 paper mills.

The lockkeeper's house at the Koudhoornse lock was built in 1879.
