Walk in the Park: Spanish Moss

by Shane Coleman March. 29, 2018 505 views

This will be the last set of photos from my recent “walk in the park”. I saved these for last.

Spanish Moss has served many purposes throughout history. It was not only used as mattress and pillow stuffing but was even put in car seats for padding. Certainly it had many other uses but for me it has even one more important... it reminds me of home.

Beautiful pictures. #2 - like the composition
When I saw it for the first time it was in a flower shop and it was tiny. Then I saw it in a movie and my first thought: would be a nice living shower-curtain. I never would have guessed it was used for mattress.

I believe the first time I heard it was used in mattresses was during a visit to one of the old plantation houses here in Louisiana.

After a little research, I learned it has been used for much more than that.

I always thought it was just good prop material for a horror movie. 😄

I just learned it’s not really considered a moss at all. It’s a “flowering” plant. I can’t recall that I’ve ever seen it’s flowers but I will be keeping an eye out. I did “google” it and apparently they produce small green flowers.

Thank you.

Thank you. It certainly helps to accent the main point of the photo.
