American Kestrel

American Kestrel in its natural habitat... a telephone pole. 😂 Funny thing, on the Merlin Bird ID app, it mentions in the 1st paragraph “often found on telephone poles.” In my limited experience, I can confirm, this is true.

Nice angle, and I love the colors of the feathers against the light background. And now I'm going to be looking at every telephone pole I see! smile

That’s great. You definitely have to be on the lookout. They are small so it’s easy to overlook them.

It’s great you have one in the garden... makes for a much better background. 😉

I just love Kestrels. At a former work place, they used to have a small breeding house on one of the high buildings, and each year a Kestrel family was breeding there. I enjoyed watching them hunt around the buildings and listening to their unique sounds. Awesome birds they are, and you captured this one in a very well executed manner!

That’s awesome and a great opportunity. It must have been really nice to be able to observe them like that.

Thank you by the way.

Telephone poles and fence posts is almost 100% of the locations that I have spotted this little beauty. Well captured. I do not know which one I like more the Kestrel or the Merlin it is a toss up for me.

Yea, I believe that’s almost exclusively where I’ve seen them too.

I’ve never photographed a Merlin but I know people that have. I may be partial to them but both are great.

Thanks, Peter. They usually don’t sit still very long for photo ops.
