New Year's weekend ride through the Angeles Crest burn area

The hills have been burned clean of shrubs and chapparal…they look strangely beautiful. You can see the crevices and contours in a way we've never seen before. Smooth warm colors belie the raging reality of a devastating fire.

As we climb the Angeles Crest, the burned out areas are everywhere.

On a ridge looking across the canyon, the stark reality of the fire's might is awesome. No movement anywhere…no birds, animals, lizards…when will they return?

Pinecombs hanging…

Stripped naked…

Ashen river…

The tree reveals its graceful structure…one we rarely see…

A burned out roadside grove…

We all saw the devastation from below…but it is hard to imagine the intensity of the raging flames and heat…

The hillsides are filled with variegated yucca with all the dead fronds burned away…they look like pineapples!

Life begins anew…
