fruit splash photo technique challenge

Other examples of this week's challenge are here. [bit.ly]

So after a week of having no time to think about the challenge, and in desperation to shoot something after being too busy to think about it all day, I thought I'd give the fruit splash challenge a shot.

The first thing I realized is that I have no clear glass containers. None. I have young children, maybe that's why. I briefly considered the fish tank, but thought the poor goldfish wouldn't appreciate being relocated because of the creative whim of the one who feeds him. Selfish fish.

I have young children, which means I also have wine glasses. Yep. Multi-purpose wine glasses, it seems. So I set up the wine glass, filled it with water and looked for fruit small enough to drop in without breaking said glass. Second realization…. no small fruit. But wait! I have … tomatoes! They are fruit (yes, they are), and in this case, they are small, being grape tomatoes.

Set up camera, set up glass, set up tomatoes….. how hard could this be?

Hard, as it turns out.

I took 55 shots.

11 were empty….

24 were full of tomatoes but too late for the splash…

6 rim shots…

a pitiful handful of shots that you could consider “splash” shots… this was the best of the handful.

Conclusion…. This kind of shooting is all about timing, which I seem to need practice with…. and wine glasses should be single purpose :)

I'm glad I did this though, and I hope that some day I decide to try again, with better setup and better planning…. maybe after the demise of the selfish fish :)

LOVE #3 and your narrative is too funny as to why you do and don't have the type of glasses you need! Great work!

I like the fourth shot Marjorie. It got me to thinking about garnishes for drinks and splashes and .... heck... I could use a wine glass with a splash of lemon and some Grand Marnier and... forget about the camera altogether and just drink the stuff. Maybe I'll try with water and fruit another day. I like the idea.

Timing was great on the last two. Have you tried the rapid advance (i.e. 3-4 frames per sec ??)

well at least you didn't break the glass...still...I think I'd enjoy seeing you mad after breaking one and your husband would be mad at you and your kids would laugh because if they are like me they will love the sound of breaking glasses! LOL (i'm still a kid ya know!)

last shot really fooled me! When I saw it in small I'd say It was water and the fruit in up!REALLY TRICKED ME!! effin' glass!

LMAO! I set my self-timer to 3 consecutive shots, and most of mine were like yours. (Now, I wonder...are olives fruits? They must be. Surely they're not vegetables?) Anyway, I am greatly amused by all of this, M. Great work.
