It is the season of quenettes

by Miclaud July. 02, 2008 10434 views

The holidays have begun and we are going to sample numerous tropical fruits (mangoes…) and vegetables (avocadoes, breadfruits …). Among these, there are small fruits, insignificant but how much pleasant : the quenettes!

Melicoccus bijugatus (Sapindaceae) also known as the mamón (although the word is considered obscene in some Spanish speaking countries), chenet, guaya, gnep, ginep, skinnip (in St. Kitts) genip, guinep, ginnip, kenèp (in Haiti), quenepa (in Puerto Rico), ackee (in Barbados), Spanish lime, or limoncillo. (Wikipedia)

To appreciate them, it is necessary to break the shell - which is not very resistant - with the teeth, then suck the film which is around the stone (some times, there are twins).

Attention!

Attention! It is better to avoid the young children to eat it, because the stone slides very easily into the throat!

I have not seen quenettes but I will definitely be on the look-out for them, they do look very enjoyable. My favourites are mangoes, sharons (caqi), pineapples and grapefruit. Luckily, these are easily available in Spain.
