195. Lent: A Time to Remember that Great Sacrifice

by Milton Jacob March. 12, 2010 3162 views

For my friends who are not familiar with the concept ‘Lent’:

The Teutonic word ‘Lent’ originally meant no more than the spring season. Still it has been used from the Anglo-Saxon period to translate the more significant Latin term quadragesima (French carême, Italian quaresima, Spanish cuaresma), meaning the “forty days”, or more literally the “fortieth day”. This in turn imitated the Greek name for Lent, tessarakoste (fortieth), a word formed on the analogy
of Pentecost (pentekoste), which last was in use for the Jewish festival before New Testament times.

Thus, Lent, in Christian tradition, is the period of the
liturgical year leading up to Easter. The traditional purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer — through prayer, penitence, almsgiving and self-denial — for the annual commemoration during Holy Week of the Death and Resurrection of Jesus, which recalls the events linked to the Passion of Christ and culminates in Easter, the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

———-
Let the people be “moved to contribute to creating just societies, where all receive what is necessary to live according to the dignity proper to the human person and where justice is enlivened by love”.

(From the Papal Message For Lent 2010)
