Self-Portraits

by Rachel The Introvert January. 11, 2019 401 views

One of my goals this year is to get better at self portraits. And I'm not talking about selfies with a phone. But being able to be in front of a camera without cringing. For too long I've hated to see myself on the other side of the lens. How ironic is it that I got into photography largely because I hated being in pictures?! I was filled with sadness when going through my albums this year at the empty spots among out family outings, adventures... if someone on the outside was going through my pictures it would be hard to tell I was involved at all. This especially stung since I have children. I realize and recognize that I am unhappy with things in my life and about me right now but even if there is room for change I can still learn to love myself even while changing those things I dislike. Part of my challenge this year was to learn to love myself and be more transparent... I've been trying to get on the other side of the lens at least once a week.

I think this is one of my favorite portraits of myself far because my daughter is in the room with me. I was laughing with her and let my guard down. It was more of a natural me vs what I was trying to force... Maybe trying too hard is just as bad as not trying at all....

I have a hard time talking about things like this on my other social media platforms... I guess thats why I have come to love Photoblog. I can be a flower on the wall, nobody knows me! There is some freedom in that...

I do hope to see changes in me by next year. And self acceptance is a big part of that...

Here is something I am more comfortable photographing... light and nature.

My happy place <3

Following the next beautiful road to the next place with no mirror in sight lol.

Thanks for listening to my rambles...

xx

Hi Rachel, it's usually not easy for a photographer to be on the other side of the viewfinder.
I do think that Photoblog is a bit special, as it allows us to have words along with our images, with a simple layout that helps focusing and going deeper. No doubt you know how to use the photography language to share emotions...
Thanks for sharing !

Thanks Will! I have a hard time smiling for selfies lol! What is up with that?! I feel like I look fake but I think that goes with selfies and staring at yourself. In front of a lens it’s different if I can just relax and forget about it and I’m not staring at my own goofy face 😂

Damn ... I'm jealous now. I knew you were great at landscape photography already, but calling yourself "introvert" and doing a fantastic self portrait like that ... If your photography or your face were to be amongst the things you're unhappy with in your life, you would be very wrong smile
That said, I don't do self portraits unless I would be forced to and whenever I realise that somebody is pointing a camera at me I stick out my tongue or start acting silly. Only exception to that rule is my girlfriend: I got used to her drawing my portrait, so she can make a decent photo of me smile

Haha! You are funny friend 😀
Wow see I couldn’t do that. That’s amazing both that your girlfriend does portraits of you and that you are vulnerable to allow her to. I think allowing someone to draw you is giving them full interpretation and freedom to create in essence YOU on paper. It’s so intimate. It amazing you have the relationship where this works for you both. And I agree with Andi, I hope you’ll post one someday!

As long as I can do something else while posing (like reading a book or working on a computer), she can indeed draw me (I don't like posing). And, since Andi indeed asked the same question, there's several portraits of me on her site ( https://tussendelijntjes.blogspot.com/smile

Wonderful goals, and lucky for us you have chosen to share them here.
I agree with Camellia I am not usually a fan of B&W, in this case the B&W just "speaks" to me. Beautiful portrait.

All of them outstanding photos!
I am not a huge fan of b&w  although I force myself to create black and white photos. I must say I really really like the b&w photo of you. It's sharp it's clear and automatically draws one's eyes to your eyes (very pretty eyes). That's not to say that the colored one is not nice, but the colored one has too many distractions, if that makes sense.  Anyway you definitely need to take more self portraits, very pretty lady smile
