Travelling to the Himalayas is full of adventure. One adventure that we had not bargained for was a mountain slide. There, right in front of us, the mountain came down with a great roar, as the buses and cars tried to reverse desperately. The road was left with boulders and it took one and a half day to get the road open again. We were told by the locals that such landslides were common in the Himalayas, thanks to lopsided development works undertaken there. Huge engineering projects had blasted through the fragile eco-system so the hills were unstable. I often wonder at the juggernaut that we call 'development'. Hardly anyone talks about the after-effects of mindless development. It is there for all to see and experience in the Himalayas.
