The Kentucky Derby!!! A REALLY big deal here in the Bluegrass state of Ky! So for this challenge to not mention the Kentucky Derby seems surreal. 🤣 I am not attending the Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville , Ky for many reasons one being I rather not celebrate it with over 150,000 people! (I have in the past and would again if I could be estorted in and sit on Millionaire‘s Row, that is NOT likely to happen.🤣) Opted for a quiet day at home with my husband indulging in a traditional derby drink, food and the comfort of my couch.
May 17, 1875 was the first Kentucky Derby with 10 horse running and 10,000 people attending. The three years old run 1 and 1/4 mile (2km) with the fastest ever being ran by Secretariat in 1973 in under 3 minutes! The winning purse is $3 million with the winner earning $1.86! The activties leading up to the Derby kick offf with Thunder Over Louisvilla two weeks prior to the race. A firework show that last for 29.5 minutes With 7,500 pyrotechnics involved! There is a hot air balloon race, steamboat race, marathon race of runners/walkers and Pegasus Parade to name a few events.
The rose you see in my image represent the blanklet of roses placed across the winner of the race. The blanket contains over 400 roses that are weaved by hand and weighs 40lbs.
The drink you see here is a Mint Julep containing of course, bourbon. It is my oldest son’s recipe so not sure I can share it but it contains the typical ingredients-mint, simple syrup and crushed ice. On average over 120,000 mint juleps are served at Chuchchill Downs on Derby Day. 😋
