Touring Missouri Fantastic Caverns- USA

by Sara G April. 21, 2009 4179 views

The only ride-through cave in the USA. Had some small bats hanging from ceiling some places. Temp in the 60's degrees.

The old fashioned steam powered generator that created lights for the caverns back in 1800's

Entrance, cars for tourists

Scenery above the caverns

Discovered by a dog hunting, but first explorers were 12 women in dresses with lanterns. Members of a sports club. :-) Enlarge to read names better

The big room they had performances and cooked food in

Riding along in a cart some are blurry..

We had to duck our heads several times

Resembles a Nativity scene on the ledge, marked with square

Exit

An old cider press on display, apples are inside the little open area, see square. Enlarge to read.

Dogwoods blooming all along the road to Arkansas, marked

On way to Arkansas from Missouri, pretty waterfall on side

I have been to Luray Caverns in Virginia--the roof was not so low as it seems from some of your pictures, I really lliked the idea of a ride-through cave--thanks for sharing--

Caves are cool, but kind of scary. You should visit Mammoth Cave in Kentucky.

Fantastic shots!!! Love #5, 6, 7, and 9...it brings me back to my childhood...every year we would go to Howe Caverns, NY. We had to walk through and I remember the bats :))

Well done! NOT the place for a claustrophobic person such as myself... although I do think bats are adorable!

Heard of the place but have never been there. Isn't it the only cave in the US you can ride through? Interesting post with great shots!
