Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui), Bar Hill (Cambs), August 2019

In Britain the painted lady does not survive our winters, so the ones we see are either visitors from the continent or their offspring. Most years a small number of painted ladies migrate across the channel, but every so often the weather conditions favour a large influx. 2019 was just such a year, painted ladies were everywhere. I photographed this specimen just a hundred meters or so from our home on a buddleia bush. I don't recall seeing a single painted lady in 2020.

Nice picture. Like you, I've seen no painted ladies this year but saw loads in 2019.
