I stood at the end of the pier wondering how the hell I could get close enough to this pod (that's the collective noun) of pelicans to get a photo. Every time I stepped on the pier the whole pod would prepare to fly away. I'd step back, or sit down and the wings would be pulled back in each bird would settle again.

The only way to get close enough was going to make me look stupid. I had to squat down as low as possible & like a dog scooting around on it's ass, waddle ever closer to the birds until I could get a decent photo. I'm not a small guy, I'm sure any one watching would have been entertained at the sight of me edging ever closer, propelling myself forward along the jetty with my hands and ass. I'm sure some of the people I know would have eye-rolled me for making a tool of myself.

I got what I wanted and then edges back off the jetty the same way. I didn't have to but the pod of pelicans had proved to be great subjects. I didn't want to freak them out any more. Looking stupid, making a bit of a fool of yourself is something

I've never been worried about. If you've never done it you've never tried anything new, or anything difficult. You're either incredibly talented or playing it way too safe. Be free, don't be afraid to fail and occasionally look like an idiot. It's worth it in the end.
