Thunderbolts & Lightning

I walked out of a pub on Australia's Gold Coast and immediately I could feel it. A storm was coming! It was the period when you can feel it in the air. Animals, if there are any of the furry variety on this garish, bright, overblown tourist town, would have felt it coming and started to act differently. Eyes began to be drawn to the west as the sky began to announce its presence with authority.

I was with two great friends who I speak to regularly but rarely see these days. They were discussing grabbing a drink at another watering hole after dinner & I was 90% with them at the time.

Then the first lightning strike burst across the sky. It was borderline biblical. I don't know if lightning actually has a colour but a very distinct blue flash engulfed the sky. The wind began to pick up. A second lightning bolt as big as the first exploded into and immediately disappeared from view.

My friends new the score. “Yeah go mate” one of them said. Nothing need to be added. They knew what I wanted to do & where I had to be. As I headed towards the new Gold Coast tram to head back to the hotel, one of them yelled “send them to us if you get any”.

After a painfully slow but most likely very short ride, and a very quick sprint through the now pouring rain, i was on the 21st floor of the hotel. The balcony was beginning to get damp from the rain, but there was just enough cover to keep the camera mostly dry. I aimed across the skyline, passed the Soul Building and Q1; Australia's tallest building and got started.

Then Thor announced his presence across my lens.

Wow...! I'm actually speechless how great these photos are. I feel like words like beautiful and amazing, etc. are way too weak expressions for these.
