Night Market

“This is one of the things I came here for” I thought as I tried to navigate my way through the crowd of people in the Sri Petaling Night Market. Sri Petaling is a predominately Chinese neighbourhood of KL. It's my home now. Tuesday night they close two of the streets and set up the street market on three different roads. So one of those roads still has cars trying to navigate their way through throngs of shoppers and in between stalls that jut out from the parking spots along the side. You need your wits about you, as stepping around someone may mean stepping into on coming traffic…albeit extremely slow traffic.

Like any market, the Sri Petaling markets are a carnival of noise, bodies, food, smells, colours and let's call it stuff. When I head there I call it “dinner on a stick night”. I've sampled a lot of the flavours within the markets but it seems the best ones are served to you skewered on wood. The Thai BBQ stall and I have had a few transactions.

As well as the food, I love the halogen lights the stall owners hang. It bathes the whole market in fluorescent glow, every two metres. They are hung high enough to have the illuminating effect they want, but not quite high enough to get a decent photo…well not anyway

And I love that I see a mixture of cultures. Chinese Malay is dominate but you still see a mix of Indian and native malay people enjoying the Tuesday night regular. Bald westerners you don't see very often…as in never. But this bald westerner is loving Tuesday nights in Sri Petaling. I feel as though I belong as much as any place in Australia I've visited.

Great pictures and great write up. This felt like one of many markets I visited in Thailand. They are full of life and the food is really cheap! My favourite was their pad thai which looks and taste much different than western version.

Thanks for sharing with us.
