by Dzmitry Samakhvalau August. 06, 2007 5670 views

Echmiadzin is Armenian Vatican. It is the residence of the Cathalicos, the high priest of all Armenian Christians.
Armenia is the first Christian country. They took Christianity as early as in 301. The Armenian Church (Hai Arakelakan Yekegetsi) is close to Monophysitism. It legitimizes only first three Universal Councils of 325 – 431, uses the old Armenian language during the service, honors icons, and sometimes practices animal sacrifices.
Echmiadzin is situated in the town of Vagharshapat not far from Yerevan. It includes the central Cathedral of Surb Ecmiadzin, several monasteries and the theological seminary. Surb Ecmiadzin is seen as one of the most ancient Christian temples in the world. However, it was rebuilt for many times and the last rebuilding was in the 19th century. Apart from the ritual part, there is a small museum inside of the Cathedral. The collection of this museum includes the spear head. Jesus was pierced with it.
