Armenia: Garni

Garni is a small Armenian village that is situated among picturesque green mountains. Local people are known as good gardeners and beekeepers. Near every cottage you would buy honey or homemade apricot and nut brandy. But people come to Garni not to drink brandy. Two thousand years ago there was the royal residence near the village. That time Armenia was enchanted with the Hellenistic and Roman cultures and the king built Greek baths and the temple of Mitra in Garni. After taking Christianity in 301 all pagan temples were ruined, but the temple of Mitra was tailored as the summer palace. During the earthquake of 1679 both, the temple and baths, were destroyed. The temple was restored only in 1960s. The baths are still ruined, but it is easy to imagine their interior
