Portrait of a mahout

by Berckmans Peter August. 25, 2018 358 views

Mahouts , the handlers of elephants, have a lifelong relation with their elephant. It is their job to take good care of their friend. And yes they are not all male. I have seen only a handfull of female mahouts. This girl I saw for the first time about 6 years back, guess she must have been around 12y than. She had a very young elephant than that was very playfull and naughty. They are still together both have grown and her elephant is still a naughty one. But the way she handles him is different from the boys. I saw many times she uses a gentle touch, just her hand on his legs ore face. And he listens.

What an amazing portrait Peter. The massive body of the elephant as background really tells a story. What tool is she wearing in her hand?

The tool is an ankusha or bullhook. And is a trainingtool. The basic is inflicting pain to learn.
