This ruined castle is the Prince castle at Grimbergen. It dates from the middle part of the 12th century and had many different purposes in its lifetime. Started as a keep for the lords of Grimbergen, got his princely status under the reign of King Phillip V from Spain around 1650. One time it housed some nons coming from France who were driven out of their home. In the 18th centurey it came in the hands of the family Merode, an old aristocratic family that untill today has a strong link with the Royal family of Belgium.
During WWII it was used by the German army as a munition depot, and they burned it when they were loosing the war and had to retreat. It was never rebuild.
In the 1950's the family Merode gave it to Grimbergen, now it is protected and kept.
