Prince castle

Still working on architecture in landscape.

This ruined castle is the Prince castle at Grimbergen. It dates from the middle part of the 12th century and had many different purposes in its lifetime. Started as a keep for the lords of Grimbergen, got his princely status under the reign of King Phillip V from Spain around 1650. One time it housed some nons coming from France who were driven out of their home. In the 18th centurey it came in the hands of the family Merode, an old aristocratic family that untill today has a strong link with the Royal family of Belgium.

During WWII it was used by the German army as a munition depot, and they burned it when they were loosing the war and had to retreat. It was never rebuild.

In the 1950's the family Merode gave it to Grimbergen, now it is protected and kept.

I like it in black and white, Peter! Nice series grinning
So much history in your part of the world...here, the ancient people were hunter /gatherers so didn't leave many things behind. The later people that settled the area never built stone houses, and certainly not castles!

Thanks Joe. Europe has a great history. For Belgium we were always under the rule of the big nations, like Spain,France,Germany and some more. Going back further it were the Romans,so they all left a bit behind

I hate to be rushed......When I was an editor for a research institute, deadlines were constantly looming with very little time left to complete the projects........Thank goodness that's in the "rear-view mirror" now.....whew......

I like the colored version over the monochrome. To me it makes it stand out. Nice shots.
