City under siege

by Berckmans Peter March. 15, 2020 280 views

As you can see in the first photo, the great market in Antwerp is as good as empty. That almost never happens, I never seen it empty like this in the daytime.

The city is under siege by the corona virus. The measures that the goverment have taken ,are felt hard by the horeca. Restaurants and cafes can not open nomore, hotels are closing by thereselfes, because they do not have any guests nomore. If you know the people here, we like to live Bourgondic. We love to eat and have a good drink, specially in the big cities in Flanders.

We still can come out, not like in some others countries here in Europe where you have to stay inside your home and only can go out for shopping or working. But I think that is gonna be the next step here. Most understand, other think it is a bit over the top.

This notice you see more and more on the doors and windows of shops hotels and pubs.

On a normal day there are always people here.

Some rerstaurants are trying to create a bit of an income by offering take aways. That they still are allowed to do. While others....

Normally this parking is full in the weekend, all the time. If this goes on for a long time there will be hell to pay. Many will have to close their doors and never open again. Some compagnies are already letting people go, some are waiting for an excuse. The raids on the shops are still going on and you can feel panic is growing. Yesterday we got a nagative advice on travel to every country, because they not know what is going to happen. Just stay home . So I have to explore Belgium some more as long I still can come out.

Sad circumstances but it does make for some great photos. Restaurants and bars and some stores are closed except for carryout and we expect alot more closings to come here in Ohio. I think they might restrict a lot of us old people to our homes. Don't think it would hurt to get out for some photos but not sure if they would excuse that. I might have to get a mask. lol

A serious pandemic that demands sacrifice- most people do not appreciate "exponential spread". Lovely images of a time and place that may never go quiet again... glad to see you took advantage and captured some super shots!

Same here Peter. My holidays are already gone 😞 The streets are empty and we only speak using whattsapp. There's an oppressive silence everywhere. Love the pictures

Very nice photos Peter, but quite eerie and unconventional. We are in the same boat as you. Restaurants closing as of tomorrow, schools closed for the next two weeks (at least) and grocery stores while open, running low on some items. Supposedly we will all get the virus, but by creating this forced quarantine, the contention is that when we do get the virus, hospitals will not be overwhelmed and we will get the necessary treatment. Time will tell. For now you and I will enjoy each other's photography smile

WOW!
Thanks for recording these historic scenes.........
Glad to see you have not been "infected"with this mass hysteria......
Great work, Amigo!
Hope all this insanity is over soon...............
Seems the "main-scream media" is doing it's best to keep the public "crawling under their beds"........sigh......
Salud!

The "news" and "entertainment" media seem to love to feed the general public's taste for catastrophe.......Seems they want to keep all eyes on their screens, as much as possible......
After all, screen time is what they have to sell....right???smile

Keep going out while you can.  We are headed in the same direction but not there yet although public gatherings are not happening.  On a positive side, South Korea is coming out of their slide, they see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Asia is heading for their warm season. The virus seems not to like warmth.
