Kielse Rat

Just had a walk today, running out of options, because we still can not wander far from our home. My 12mm was on the camera, always good for a bit of wideangle fun.

So this part of the city is called " het Kiel " and everybody who lives there are called kielse rat. So where does that name come from, well it came from the world of football or soccer. and here is the story.

In 1899, a large group of players (3 / 4th!) Left Antwerp football club out of discontent. One of them was Alfred Grisar. Alfred's father owned a large piece of land on the Kiel. The Kiel is a neighborhood in Antwerp, just south of the city center. There Alfred was allowed to develop a new sports club. The team was named Beerschot Athletic Club.

Supporters of Antwerp have since called the players and supporters of Beerschot "Ratten". Later, the spot name was also given to all residents of the large area around the football stadium, the Kiel. Hence: Kiel Rat.

The hate between the 2 clubs is still very strong and supporters can drink eachothers blood. This rat here has been subject to a lot of vandalism. Both clubs not have enough funds to keep going on in a healthy way, but they rather stop than merge in one club, so that Antwerp has an healthy strong soccerteam.

Luckely I am not a soccer fan.

It makes me sad to hear of any vicious rivalry between neighbours. Unfortunately, it happens all over I guess. Certainly here in the UK this rivalry is most fierce when the two local sports teams play each other in what we call a "Local Derby".

On lighter a note the images are Great.

What a strange sculpture and an interesting story to go with it. Which reminded me of when we were in college, one of the sports activities we had was ice hokey. Every Friday night we would all go to the ice rink to watch our University team play with another team in the area. The rivalry between some of the teams was really bad. On many occasions, the fans would bring rats/mice and throw them on the ice to mess with the players and disrupt the entire game.

Very interesting story, the sculpture of the rat must be impressive in person. Greetings and take care.

That happens when you got 2 competing teams in one city. The rat is pretty big
