America the Beautiful is a patriotic song written by Catherine Lee Bates in 1895. The music was composed by a church organist Samuel A. Ward.
As with pretty much all songs, this started out as a poem titled " Pikes Peak" It was then titled "America" for publication.
Ward wrote the music "Materna" for the hymn "O Mother dear, Jerusalem". It was then combined with with the Bates poem and titled "America the Beautiful".
