Bird feathers and the Aztec culture:

The feathers that were used by Aztec people in different ceremonies for elaborate things such as a headdress which were made from tropical birds. The feathers were worked into designs. In ancient time, the Aztec feather workers would make clothing out of feathers from all sorts of tropical birds for nobility and royalty.

The bright colors and the natural shine of tropical bird feathers made Aztec very desired when it came to trading them. The birds were hunted and kept in captivity for their feathers. The feathers were plucked and then woven into beautiful designs or they were used for head dresses.
