34th Annual Blue Cross Broad Street Run (PART ONE)

Sunday May 5th, 8:30AM, the 34th Annual Broad Street run took place. Runners from all over the world come to compete in the largest 10 mile event in the country. After one or two peaks the race is a smooth gradual downhill run to the Philadelphia Navy Yard.

Some of the highlights incuded tributes to Boston with the majority of runners wearing red socks, tee shirts, or carrying flags. All along the race you saw runners dressed as giant birds, ballerinas, pirates, sporting tuxedos, a fez, and an alien or two.

At the start of every run, they send out all wheelchair participants first. In the background, you can see one of the many drum circles, rock bands, marcling bands or people that run out of their houses to hold up signs that pop up all along the route.

Around the 3 mile mark, where I normally stand, the first five runners show up under heavy security, helicopters and news media.
The 4th runner, wearing #40 is Ayele Feisha of Ethipoia. At 47 minutes and 3 seconds, he came in first place.

From a trickle to a flood….

Bringing up the rear…
The last participant heads downtown with motorcycle and fire department escort.

One of the stickers the runners wore on their number placard…

I really love these photographs! It is very touching that they dedicated the run to Boston! It is the right thing to do!
