Flag and Sundial

The Dutch flag was flown today from churches - or in this case the Royal Palace in the centre of Amsterdam. It is flown today to commemorate the formal end to the second world war.

A sundial, it was about an hour out - but then it was built sometime before daylight saving was thought of.

Now without zoom - it's on top of the entrance to the Nieuwe Kerk (the new church - to distinguish it from the old church). Many of the churches have bells that sound on the hour and half hour (and sometimes quarter hour as well), I don't think the Nieuwe Kerk does.

It was a bit warm today, and I saw two guys jump off a bridge and swim in the canal for a bit. The canals are relatively clean but this one is fairly high traffic - if I were choosing a canal to swim in it wouldn't be this one.

This is the first time to I've ever seen anyone swimming in a canal.

I chose a more civilised cool-down method

That drink looks so yummy - and I love sundials. It's Daylight Savings Time that I can't stand.

In Utrecht they often swim in the canal and even though they are less gross than in Utrecht (or so I assume) it's still a no no for me... the biy just tells me that he once swam in a canal (hero...) and he had an odd rash for a week.

I'm with MizB, but I get sketched out over thinking of taking a bath and sitting in my own dirty water.

That is a very cool sundial. I wouldn't swim in the canals- flushed through or not, it skeeves me out- frappe much preferred, I agree!

Shangrila - well they didn't come out of the water with a third eye or anything. I think the water's probably fine, the whole canal system gets flushed through with fresh water every 24-48 hours and although there are houseboats they don't dump waste into the canals.

don't know why the would do that Jen - I don't even do it here, half the clocks are on summer time half are on normal time. Those contraptions with an added extra - clock, that no one knows how many times to push button a to change the time - they never get changed.
