I did my duty for the planet today and took all the plastic bottles back for recycling - we actually pay a small premium on the bottle which we can get back by doing this. I got back a total of 5.10, the machine prints a little receipt with a bar code on it which you give to the cashier and the amount comes off your grocery bill (or can be paid in cash).

It's a good system, not sure how many people use it though.

Very civilised system, in my opinion. If only we had something like that here in the UK!

we use them all the time. Every penny counts ;-) (heey, we're Dutch for a reason!)

We have those too. Only problem is, they only work if the machine can read the little recyling code thingy on the label. And since I have the habit of pulling labels off any bottles I drink out of...

In states that have mandatory bottle and can deposits we have banks of the same machines in supermarket parking lots.
