Beautiful captures Rachele. I am curious what approach you use to get all the people to smile for you. I am assuming these are strangers out and about in Buffalo.

Thank you so much! I'm so glad you asked. Some of the people I take pictures of are people I know who I run into on my rides, but you are correct, they are mostly strangers who I meet (but they are not strangers after! smile ). Sometimes I just start with "would you mind if I took your picture," sometimes I strike up a conversation first, asking them questions about whatever it is they are doing. I am a big believer in the motto "treat everyone you meet as if they are important." This approach creates a genuine connection most of the time! Another thing that people love is when I show them their photo on my camera right away and compliment them -- they are usually pleasantly surprised and happy, which allows me sometimes to take more photos! I think this helps them trust me too. And of course when I show up with prints and hand them out to the people who are in them, that really forms a relationship.

The other day I visited a street memorial and asked the people gathered there who they were honoring. It was Paper who had been killed a couple of months ago, and it was his birthday so they had gathered. And it turns out I had photos of Paper with me, so I was able to share the photos with them. They put the photos right up above the candles. It was a really special moment.

Upon reflection, I think a better way to say it is "Show everyone you meet that they are important." I think that's my mission.

Thank you Rachele for your response. I teether totter when it comes to capturing strangers. Sometimes it falls in my lap other times it is struggle. I have noticed though, recently that people are more open to having their picture taken. I like the idea that you show them their photo after the capture. I might try that on my next outing smile
