GARY - My Best Photo 2011

by Rodica O December. 16, 2011 954 views

It might have happened that you saw interesting people passing by but you didn't dare stopping them for taking a picture….It happens to me very often. Not only that I don't dare asking, but I also realize that once asked, even if they accept - the candid is spoiled.

On a very hot summer day this year I've seen this interesting face in the street car and dared for the first time to ask for a pose.
His face and hat caught my eye but I was afraid I'll have to answer to the question: “Why ?” and didn't know what to say without offending.
He was a homeless man and I was prepared to receive rejection and maybe an angry reaction.
I was surprised to have him politely accepting with gentleness and after failing to take clear pictures of him in the moving streetcar I got him accepting even to get off for more pictures in the street.
I felt so bad when I found out that he missed his stop just to pose for me.
We talked a little and he told me that he posed to artists sometimes and been used as an extra in a few movies.
He didn't ask money from me and he was very grateful when I gave him some for his time and effort. I thought he will melt in the hot sun while posing without complaining. A very gentle soul full of dignity, with no bitterness despite of the hard life he has.
I hope he will manage to stay safe this upcoming harsh winter.

This experience showed me that if you approach people in the right way, they could be wonderful models even in the street.
The picture was taken just with a handheld small point&shoot camera (my 10years old but loyal Sony DSC-T100 ) but reworked a little in Photoshop.
In fact, Gary is the one who made it all up for the lack of better equipment, special lights, …whatever.
Thank you Gary, for being so patient and understanding.

My wish to everybody for 2011 is to find a way of reaching and experiencing what they love most - whatever it is that.
While of course not everything is possible, at least trying with perseverance and inventivity is giving a chance to achieving it.
Don't delay it anymore, follow your heart, give it a chance - now !

I wish you all a better 2011 !

This is a great portrait Redro, an I agree totally with your reasoning. I find it difficult to ask, but I'm really glad that you did here. And here's wishing all the best to Gary too.

I like it very, very much! One of the best portraits I have ever seen. As mentioned by others, there is indeed something soulful about his looks, especially his eyes.

this is, by all means, a fantastic shot. his eyes, his beard, the texture of his clothes... everything fits here to make a grant portrait. personally, i very much like that you restrained from boosting up the contrast here to make it more dramatic, that you use mellow greys and have worked on the background grain; all of which makes this a disturbing as much as a pleasant view. welcome back! :-)
