Moon shot to pass the time

by Stefan Fletcher April. 08, 2009 6659 views

Judging from my rapidly lengthening hair and teeth this evening, I realised the moon was either full or close to it. I suppose such moments affect us all. As there are no virgins and few goats in central Athens, I thought I’d sacrifice a bit of my time.

Moon shots are one of those times when you must ignore your camera’s light meter. Yes, all those romantic postcards of full moons over a famous monument are fake and have been photoshopped. If you look at the moon in this post [], you’ll see the highlights are blown to preserve the rest of the extraordinary colours. I don’t like doctoring images to make them look real.

Anyway, you probably need a tripod, quite a fast shutter speed and fairly narrow aperture (high number) for a full moon, otherwise the image will be blown out and you get a shiny white blob. I use a remote shutter control or the timer to avoid camera shake.

This image taken with a Canon 100-400 L with a 2x extender at f/13 and 1/60". The camera I used has a sensor with a crop factor of 1.6, so the focal length was the equivalent of 1280 mm.

The image was then captured in Lightroom 2 and sharpened in Photoshop CS4 (high pass filter with overlay blend mode). And this is quite probably the most boring post I've done to date.

Two questions:
Do you see a face in the moon? To whom does it belong?

"Great" shot - thanks for the lesson too. No, there's no face on the moon. Surely every one knows it an interpalnetary bowling ball. The finger holes are the dark circles near the top; there's a similar one for the thumb on the dark side.

I noticed the Moon the previous night and thought that it should be full very soon.

I wanted to take a shot of the full moon--but after a glimpse of this one I'm backing off--and by the way, I always see an old lady's face on the moon--where did she go?

Real clear technical shot and real clear technical explanation. One question though - is it made of cheese?

thank you for your explanation and for this picture of the moon. Its sharp, but I would play a little bit with the contrast or gradation. I think there is more... Hey, I don`t want to see faces, I want to see the rest of Apollo moon missions. (smile)

I see a cats face. I may have to attempt this myself. Very clear picture.

Oddly enough the moon face looks like a halloween pumpkin face. Nice sharp image, lots of detail which is pretty much what you want from a photo of the moon. We had a lovely one here today, plus the usual increase in sirens and helicopters. :).
