Another sadistic panorama

Sorry if you have only just come back from the hospital after viewing yesterday's panorama. Here's another one: a night shot of southern Athens with the Acropolis. What looks like the ninth circle of Hell on the far right / bottom is in fact the port and city of Piraeus. Sorry, my mistake, that should be the eighth circle of Hell. It was cloudy and the sky was lowering. I couldn't resist upping the livid bruise-like purple.

Sorry as well for not catching up on my friends' posts. It's rather hectic right now, but I will take the time soon.

Apologies also to all those who have offered such wonderful comments and feedback. It really does inspire and entertain me. My life would definitely be poorer without your input.

If, however, you have anything less than constructive or amusing to add, I suggest you take another close, attentive look and don't forget to crane that neck as much as possible.

Technical notes:
Here's how I do panos with a narrow aperture (high f/ number). It doesn't work with close-up panoramas. I use a sturdy tripod and a bloody big ball head (the tripod mount on which the camera rests). I use a spirit level on the flash hot shoe to make sure the camera is level and not too much has to be cropped out afterwards. I take about 10-15 vertical shots, ensuring a 10-20% overlap. It's a good idea to take a dud shot (say your hand) to make the start and end of the sequence. Dumb, but effective. There's little point in making a 20-shot sequence, because proportions are displeasing, unless you're really into sausage photos. I use a prime lens (fixed focal length, usually a 50 mm), a remote timer and sometimes the mirror lock-up function to ensure as sharp an image as possible.
The Photoshop CS4 photostitch feature does all the magic and then I edit it in the usual way. You do need a fairly hefty computer; yesterday's original PSD file weighed in at about 450 Mb.

Quite a lot of heavy lifting! Great work. I'm enjoying the panos very much.

I prefer this one with it's purple cloak of night and the glow from the car headlights. Nice contrasting colours. Have to go now my neck hurts.

Very nice. I think I prefer the lighting in the previous one better. The building details can be seen much better. Still very impressive.
