Finding the meridian between nostalgia and self-pity with flowers

by Stefan Fletcher June. 23, 2009 5012 views

It occurred to me today, as I was desperately looking for excuses not to pack up more of my life in grotty cardboard boxes, that what I really needed to do was post pictures of flowers.

It dawned on me that contemplating carpets of spring flowers in Greece was something I wasn't going to do anymore. Snif, snif. Their rarity in this arid, increasingly desertified country made them all the more precious to me. And I realised that I hadn't fulfilled a long-standing dream, which is to enjoy wild tulips on the island of Chios, one of my favourite places in the world. (They flower in spring and we are now resolutely in summer.) I had this fantasy of getting up late at night, driving through the wild landscape with Scarlatti sonatas playing loudly and finding a spot to watch the tulips welcome the dawn.

And then I remembered that where I intend to live is 41 km (about 25 miles, thank you, Google maps) from Grasse, the flower capital of the world. All those images of Provence are going to mine, all mine, ha ha!

If you're curious about the location, I strongly recommend reading Patrick Süskind's The Scent (my German-speaking friends here can enjoy it in the original) and/or watching the British film adaptation.

Unlike this post [photoblog.com], these are ‘naturally’ composed, although one or two reposts may have snuck in.

I'll do Chios next year - and enjoy it all the more as a tourist.

Back to my boxes…

If you read the text below, you'll find that the lavender above refers to Grasse, the flower capital of the world. The following images are more or less organised by colour.

Good set - and you know, one of the things I like about sites like Photoblog is the different perspectives people have about places... all good tips for future places to visit. Chios sounds wonderful.

Happy boxing day!
Wonderful pictures. Especially the poppy, I saved that as a favourite - this is good because it is a rare thing for me to save flower pics as faves.

Oh, I hope you will flood your blog with landscapes full of lavender!! =D I just love it. And tulips, too, because I'm an April child and I always got tulips for my birthday, and always had some in the garden.

I hope you wait future changes as much as I do. =)))
