Friday Fun: why I’m called “revenant” - a true shaggy dog story

by Stefan Fletcher August. 07, 2009 8117 views

Are you sitting comfortably? Then I shall begin. Once upon a time, I discovered a great web community for amateur photographers called Photoblog, and so I joined. Not having much imagination, I used some of my initials as my name: SJASF.

I was lucky to make friends with some impressive photographers and very nice people and quickly grew addicted to the camaraderie and creativity here. I even managed the enormous ego-boost of having two FP’s one day after the next. People’s posts and input made my head swell so much, I had to walk through doors sideways.

Much more importantly, I was privileged to become friends with some special people - and I’m lucky to have kept most of them and to have met new ones.

One of my friends here is an institution, but an institution who occasionally bares her body in a manner that some might find offensive. The Powers That Be decided to restrict her to ‘friends only’ and she protested. In solidarity (and to stir things up, I confess), I posted lots of pictures of nude statues, culminating with Courbet’s L’Origine du Monde, which you can enjoy above - but without the addition I have added this time to avoid the same punishment as before, because I too was restricted to friends only.

Fair enough; you can argue the pros and cons of taste vs. censorship and never achieve a watertight definition, which, let's face it, is pointless in such a broad-based site as PB. It is better to let the human owners of this site decide, however arbitrary their decision.

But then I took a closer look at the ads on my page. This was when PB was financed by advertising only and everyone could post 30 images. All mine were about meeting single women (in Greek) via shady dating agencies. I was so disgusted by the double standards that I vented my spleen in the suggestions forum and left in a royal huff, the wounded artist who kept his integrity (insert sad, yet courageous music here, such as the Looney Tunes anthem).

A year later I returned. “Revenant” in French means “coming back” or “zombie”, depending on the context - rather apt, I thought.

The moral of this story is: don’t post pictures with pubic hair, even if they’re 19th century oil paintings.

Why am I telling you this? Because this is my 100th post (correcting for deletions and considering the Shakespeare ones a single entry).

Thanks to you all for making these 100-odd posts in my second PB persona such an enjoyable and creative experience.

Stéfan

It's nice to know you stood up for a believe even if in the end it's a futile battle....not many would do that. As for your 100th post...congrats. Mine came and went with the intent of celebration, but nothing special came out.

wow, never saw such bright red and heart shaped pubic hair... ;-) and again, I must think about those uncountable shades of truth... what is artistic for one, pornographic for the other. it will always be this way. looking forward the next hundred :-)

you rabble-rouser you! congrats!

If you don't push the boundaries nothing ever moves or as my friend says, you just break the rules because you're stubborn and you think you're right... :) Oh, wait, that's me....

Ha! Nicely said, Stéfan. Congrats on the 100... I don't want to get started on censorship because I could go on for hours and hours, but once again I agree with you. As for the ads PB has - I believe they are 'google' based and just as my 'Gmail' account, they are generated on the content herein and is relative to what is going on in your emails or post in this case. That is kinda creepy in it of itself.

Congrats on 100 not out; may the second century be as controversial and thought-provoking as the first.... and at the end of the day f***-em if they can't take a joke!

What is artistic nude and what is not?
There we can debate hours and days of ...
And, as I have better things to do with my time, I am not doing a debat for it! I am PRO artistic nudity, loud and clear! But, for no one to be shocked, I place such pictures on a closed profile with only people can assess if they are also in to nude photography . ;o)
Congrat on your post n° 100
