Avignon Gare TGV 5 janvier

by Stefan Fletcher January. 06, 2010 4974 views

This may look like an airport concourse, but in fact it's the rather beautiful TGV (high-speed train) station in Avignon from where my daughter goes to see her mother in Paris once a month. The beautiful and comfortable train does the 700-odd km in two-and-a-half hours and arrives slap-bang in the centre of Paris.

As an interpreter, I've had my fill of being shunted around in flying tin cans where gross inefficiency and rudeness are blamed on bogus security requirements. I love this train.

The station exterior is equally appealling (an ornamental garden vaguely reminiscent of oriental ones, all the more surprising for being set in a very ugly part of Avignon), but it was dark - and very cold! - yesterday, so nothing to show.

French privacy laws are very strict (children aren't allowed to take photos of each other with their phone cameras), so I had to wait until there was no one in the first shot. The second was taken, ahem, on the fly…

Great pics - but omg - children aren't allowed to take pictures of each other on their camera phones?? I think the last photo could possibly benefit with a bit more cropping at the bottom? Light colours drag the eye downwards (apparantly!).

Cool building and I agree about the train. Back end of last year when I went to Zurich I went by Eurostar to Paris then TGV to Zurich rather than fly - twice the price of flying but more than worth the relaxed way of travelling

How long did you have to wait for it to be that empty?

I love the shape and lines of the roof of this new station (and comfortable trains that run too - what more could you want?)

It looks like a wonderful building - the sort that would get my photographic juices going! There's something satisfying about railway architecture, old or new :-)

I really like the first one without the people. I like how you can see all the lines converge in the distance.

Indeed an impressive gare.
The picture without people is something apart, I can not describe why, maybe because I do not like crowded places, I find this one quite neat.
