There are 36,000 municipalities in France ranging from the huge, such as Paris, to the tiny, like the village where I live. In each one, however, there is a memorial just like this one.

It is a list of names of the village’s citizens who died in a war. It is a shockingly long list and often, heart-breakingly, the same family names appear: fathers and sons, brothers, cousins.

There should also be a memorial to their mothers, their wives, their children, but there is not enough marble for that.

Which is why we remember.

Together with most villagers we attended a remembrance service in front of our village war memorial.
Flowers were laid by the children and the Marsaillaise sung by the children... which made the episode
extremely moving.
Your photo is beautifully composed...the chrysanths, the French Flag, the memorial, the names of the fallen and a floral tribute... you've encapsulated this day for me. There is nothing to distract the eye from France's great loss.
Exceptionally well presented...it's gone to my favs. because of its content.

I hope that such remembrance will not fade out as the last of the generations who experienced the World Wars first-hand finally disappear. Perhaps the universality of such memorials will help secure the place of remembrance in society's consciousness - let's hope so.

Heartbreaking image, Stefan. All the sadness that comes from war....you'd think by now we'd have found a better way.
