Welcome to my One Focal Length Forever Challenge.

In a nutshell it means you pick your favourite focal length (Prime Lenses Only) and you have to commit to that focal length forever.

Yep forever.😎👍.

One lens to rule them all.

You are allowed to upgrade your one and only lens at any time, but it can only be replaced with your forever picked focal length. I decided 50mm was going to be my signature lens using the f1.8 S lens on my Nikon Z6.

Why? I hear some say...Well I have heard so many photographers over the years go on about if I had only one lens, yet those same photographers never could commit to the idea ultimately. And yes I am sure their are photographers shooting with just one prime lens, But I am challenging the word FOREVER..Interesting thought.

For me it's about the pure simplification and also the limitations it places and how I work around those creatively developing my now new signature focal length...✌

Would you take on my one focal length forever challenge and if so what focal length would you go for?

I cant wait to hear your thoughts on this...

Ric C

With film it is 50mm... digital it is all over the map for me.

Hi Russel, thanks for thoughts, do you know why you have a difference between film and digital?

Film only the 50mm interested me well maybe a 35mm but with digital I tend to shoot a variety of things mostly food and wildlife and there is no one focal length that is interchangeable enough to me to only use it.

Totally agree, once you introduce wildlife and any similar genre that requires a good bit of reach then the camera bag requires extra lenses.
This was one of the reasons I didnt include zooms into my challenge as I felt one focal length and the word forever had the Mount Everest factor. Definitely not for most but might intrigue the odd one or two.
Thank you for replying Russell, nice insight between your film vs digital styles and requirements 👍

When I first started shooting with a non instamatic type camera it was an old Nikon with a 50mm lens so that is what I am use to on film bodies and truthfully I love that focal length on it if I come across an inexpensive 35mm then I would like to use that just to see.... because it is a bit wider. Zooms vs Primes I love primes and the extra attention ti detail that I have to use when shooting with them. Zooms for when I am doing wildlife I love; although something like a 500mm with a 1.4 and 2x teleconverter would also work nicely maybe when I win the lotto I will go with one of those. Anymore it is what tool will work best for me at that moment.

Thanks Camellia, and yeah I just wanted to do something that makes other people go could I do it and what would I use as my forever lens...It's mainly about doing this for myself, but then I thought why not push it out their and see what reactions I get and if anyone else would go for it...smile

Hey welcome Ric. A big challenge, an easy one if you only have lens. I have a few and find myself working a lot with the same lens. My fav must be my Samyang 12mm closely followed by the XF35mm 1.4 from Fuji. Could live happely with only those two. Good luck with your challenge.

Thank you for the welcome Peter, and yes I loved my XF35mm 1.4 I had it paired with my XT1 and sometimes on my Pro1..And like you I could live very happily with just two lenses, mine were 28mm and 85mm...But this one lens forever challenge has been eating at me for years, so in the end I thought I'm just going to do it.lol smile+1

Good luck with your challenge, Ric! I think simplicity is good and single focal length let's you focus more on all the other aspects of the photography. I wouldn't take such challege, because I want to experiment with different gear and techniques, but also I think it is not as limiting as it may seem, most of the time it could be just the matter of "zooming" with your feet instead of the lens. And 50mm is great and universal, I really love my MD 50mm f1.7 on my Minolta XD smile

Thanks Piotr for your comments,
and yes simplicity is the key for me now...Plus travelling on a motorcycle I need to have a minimal setup due to space limitations. 😎👍
