Chicken of the woods

When I was walking round the woods yesterday i came across two lovely examples of fungus which I just had to put on my blog in a place all of their own so they would get the respect they deserve!

The big flat one is “Chicken of the Woods”, otherwise known as Sulphur Polypore - which I am assured you can eat. Polypores are often plate-like and most grow out of tree trunks or rotting wood. Some of these fungi are known as Bracket Fungi, because they look like shelves growing out of the sides of trees!

I don't know the name of the other one but it is one of the types called Earthballs or Puffballs - and it just looked so lovely in its woodland setting.

rather lovely - but I am not sure about eating it!

you can see where the bracket description comes from!

a lovely puffball

i really like this shot

They are beautiful mushrooms but your last one I have to add to my favorites, it is just superb lighting and composition. Thank you for sharing.

:) I love looking at the fungi when walking in the woods and often wonder which ones are edible... but am afraid of a wrong decision! Very nice shots!

They really are beautiful creations, aren't they. Great shots, I love the contrast of the soft creams against the forest floor.
