Centre for Alternative Technology

The Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) was founded in 1973 on the site of the disused Llwyngwern slate quarry near Machynlleth, in Mid Wales.

CAT is an education and visitor centre which demonstrates practical solutions for sustainability. They cover all aspects of green living: environmental building, eco-sanitation, woodland management, renewable energy, energy efficiency and organic growing.

CAT has become Europe's leading eco-centre. It is staffed by 90 permanent staff and volunteers all year round, and a further 60 people during the summer months when it gets around 65,000 visitors every yea.

I first went to CAT in the early 90's and it is one of my favourite places - it keeps changing - I miss the old wave machine! but it is always interesting. In June 2011 CAT won an Ashden Award for its achievement in training people through a range of postgraduate and professional courses to work in sustainable energy.

walking up (no lift in winter) the first thing you see are the Eco cabins
