Kalithea springs - ancient and modern

The springs at Kalithea near to Rhodes town have been known from the time of Ancient Greece for the beneficial properties of their red waters. In August and September crowds of visitors regularly came to be near the springs. Then came the Knights who fortified Rhodes - and who bathed here at Kalithea and from then on people came from all over Asia Minor to benefit from the waters and take advantage of this idyllic setting.

Rhodes has had many rulers and it was the Italians - who ruled from 1912 to 1943 - who made a feature of the springs and built these glorious buildings - Moorish ii style - which were opened in 1929.

In the years that followed the spa fell into disuse but the local Mayor took on the task of renovating the monument and the springs have been restored to their earlier glory. The unique combination of nature, architecture and history offers visitors the opportunity of a very special experience - in a setting steeped in history! But now with modern amenities - it is also a very popular venue for weddings - we saw four whilst we were there.

Very interesting... and quite different with the Moorish influence.
