Madeira Island footpaths (Pico do Arieiro - Pico Ruívo)

by Rui Alves - Madeira Spotters September. 12, 2009 4481 views

This is the first post of a series covering Madeira Island, my home land.

This footpath connects the two highest hills.
“Pico Ruívo”, the highest one, can only be visited by foot and tops 1861m high.
The “Pico do Aireiro” can be reached by car and it's as high as 1818m.

This 3 hours and an half path offers stunning views across the mountains.
From highly inclined steps to tunnels, from birds to butterflies, from endemic flowers to fresh water…
this is, for sure, a must if you visit Madeira.
The path It's safe and very well signed.
It worths the physic effort :)

Some data about Madeira Islands:
- Last year Madeira surpassed the one million tourist, only in 2008;
- Both boat and aircraft are available to reach the Island;

For further information, here you can find the oficial Madeira Island Tourism [madeiraislands.travel] web page.
