A Walk in the Woods....Reptiles and Insects Oh My!!!!

by Russell Smith May. 05, 2019 267 views

After the rains of yesterday and early morning (overnight) I decided that the humidity had dropped enough that I wanted to get out. It is amazing what a few inches of rain will do for a swamp because what was mud on last Sat. is back to water this Sun. while the water level is low it is a step back in the right direction.

6 foot or so Alligator who decided I was not worth the effort of being its snack :P .

The park was quiet no events were going on outside of a birthday so it was quite nice. I only saw about 10 Alligators with the fella above being the largest at maybe 6 foot. While it was in a spot close to the slightly larger one last week this one is a different animal. On a side note the distance in between the nose and the eyes in inches is about the length of the animal in feet. This is a rough measurement.

While it was warm today the added water caused the snakes to be more active. Water snakes moving back to shallower water to hunt and dry land snakes were moving back to dry land. As a result I saw almost a dozen snakes. One of them was a small Water Moccasin but it saw me move the camera and lens up to shooting position and decided I was too much of a threat and fled back to the waters safety.

This was the best shot I got today for snakes.

The two photos above are skinks I think they are two different species but I am not 100% sure on that . I know the one with the red head will get about 12 to 18 inches long and about as big around as a mans thumb.

While the next two photos are not reptiles I am loosely lumping them into the reptile category for this post. Unfortunately the turtles were jumpy today makes me think some asshat has been harassing them which if I were to catch them they would go for a dip in the swamp.

This is an image that I am going to play around with and create several different edits because I can see an edit in my head but it is fuzzy and I want to see if I can either make the idea less fuzzy or achieve it . Stay tuned I will be doing one that is Squirrels and a Flower.

Great variety of wildlife in this set! I especially love the skinks, the water snake, and of course the turtles. Seems like we had similar outings this weekend (minus the gators here).

:) thank you . Have you been up or down to Macon and seen the Indian mounds ? I was just looking through some old photos of my childhood and saw a few from the indian mounds in that area which reminded me about them.

I've only driven through Macon, never stopped, but I would love to visit them. I've read a little about the ones in Clarksville (farther north and little closer to where I live now), but not sure if they are connected at all.
