Coffee in the Evening....

by Russell Smith January. 02, 2020 304 views

I was having a hard time deciding in between the black and white and the color version. This is two separate frames but taken close together .

I like the ripples in the coffee in the color but I like the shades and tones in the black and white. The Chemex and Kettle were part of my Christmas gift from my daughter :) I am sure I will do a few more with coffee as a theme this year but this was more or less the first image out of my mind and onto the SD Card/Harddrive . The light is very very did I mention very flat today so rather than accept it I turned the flash on . Just a basic flash camera back right and set the power to 1/2 power (I tried a lower power and lower shutter speed but did not like what the coffee was doing) and I had a white card pointing back at the chemex for a bit of fill.

The brown warm colours are the colours I would always associate with coffee.
From that standpoint the B&W does not work for me
However (always a But in every story), the texture of the filter works nicely in B&W

I would agree. What I like about the monochrome is the textures and tones. What I dislike about it is the pattern of rings in the coffee within the Chemex.

I agree it lacks definition. If it was sharp it would have been stunning

Have to cast my vote for #1 as well. Color is a big part of the concept of coffee in my mind, so that one just speaks to me. Love the composition!

The color version is semi monchromatic now that I look at it.

I prefer the B&W version, but it is a bit flat IMHO. Happy New Year my friend

I like the shades and tones in the black and white. I think if I were to convert the color to a b and w I may like the b and a bit more .

Appetizing! I prefer #1, because without color #2 lost it's good smell too!

:) Thank you. Believe it or not the surface everything is sitting on is 4 thinish planks that I stained a darker color. Light and also easy to store away.

Now that you mentioned that I agree . For me it was more about the rings inside the pot that I liked in the color version.

I would go with the color one here. The colors are warm and you can almost smell the coffee. Very creative with your lighting.

Thank you. The lighting was very simple and rather than a soft light I went with a harder light source :) .

The black and white image is great but the warm tones of the colour version have the edge for me. Great shots!
