Starlingfest

I've always been a big fan of birds in the garden and over the years in this house, we've seen some great visitors but, a regular and not always a favourite for many, is the Starlings.

I love them. Noisy, argumentative, greedy, great mimics and beautifully coloured.

So, as well as practicing faster speeds and trying to capture their wing shapes, I've collected up a few! images of them as they throng to the feeder with the youngsters in tow.

Iridescent colours

Iridescent colours

Ok, so they ARE noisy, greedy and can be a pest but, look at those colours.

Spread your little wings ...

Spread your little wings ...

There are many more beautiful Starlings scattered across the globe but, many people here fail to ever notice how beautiful ours are.

Me first, me first

Me first, me first

Did I mention they are greedy? WOW, when they all arrive together it's chaotic and amazing to watch, from a few feet away!

I also love the young birds as they transition to adult plumage.

I really would prefer to shoot them in a more natural environment but they seem to scatter to the four winds when they leave the garden.

They CAN be quite greedy though ;)

This sequence was only noticeable after the event, it all happens so quickly and chaotically

Yep. Chaos.

Being so close though, they do offer great photo opportunities.

The House Sparrows carry on regardless but, stay well clear when they all arrive together.

Wonderful captures and you're right about the colors when you get such close detail. Unfortunately, I've spent way too much time with them in the natural state. My college campus was home to flocks of thousands that our Zoology professor has us count and record flock behavior. Loud, messy and ...yeah.

What a great set Brian! I don't think I have ever seen any bird hanging upside down the way you have captured on here. I scrolled through your photos 3 times and my favorite is #2....those spread out wings are amazing.
