Lesson #3: Exposure Modes

by Liz July. 23, 2008 3142 views

Actually, lesson #3 covered quite a bit, and as I'm only concerned here with what I learned (and don't really want to violate anyone's copyright giving away the course material!), here's another of those exercises I should have thought to do but did not. One of the assignments was to take a day and shoot in a variety of conditions using Program, Aperature Priority, Shutter Speed Priority, and Manual Modes, and get familiar with when and why one might be better than the other for a given situation.

Sounds easy, right? Well, I'd recommend giving it a try. I routinely use program and aperature priority, and even venture into manual occasionally. But I learned quite a bit on this exercise, including that program mode is frequently not the best choice (duh!), and that I totally have no understanding of when to use shutter priority and need to work on that (which promises to take longer than a one week homework assignment!). Most importantly, it made me focus on thinking about what result I wanted, versus what pretty object or moment in time I wanted to capture. Gosh, maybe that whole thinking first thing IS a good idea…. ;)

Program Mode (Sorry, this is a repost, but it's the photo I used for the course homework, so I include it here).

Aperature Priority

(The fact that the National Park Service painted these Revolutionary War cannon baby blue and yellow amuses the heck out of me. I'm sure the revolutionary war soldiers worried about the colors of their cannon - NOT!).
