Hidden Bath 5: Roofs and skylines.

Continuing my series of hidden Bath today I offer a bird's view of Bath. There is much to see in Bath but most visitors have to do it so quickly that there is little time to linger and view the hidden detail. I walk around the City a lot taking pictures and observing people. I have noticed that no one ever looks at either the pavement they walk on or the roofs of the buildings they pass. I therefore decided to include both in this series. So we start with roofs.

The chimneys of Bath are now an anachronism as no one lights fires any more because of their air polluting effects. New buildings do not have chimneys so the skyline is now not only historic but it is also an interesting vestige of their architect's idiosyncracy. They are now non-functional ornament as are the door knockers of a previous posting. Everyone today has electronic chimes or electric fires and gas-fired boilers. Progress with electricity?
