Somewhere there is a clock ticking. But does it matter if one believes in circular time yet lives in a linear timeworld?

Time is a funny old thing.

Today's posting is about time. For many people it is a linear measurement that gets faster and faster as they age. For others it is a slow circular connection from their present through seven generations of their ancestors back to their present. Of course there are non-metaphysical approaches to time that involve complicated physics, mathematics, and cosmology. But for most normal mortals it is the way we regulate our lives, or are regulated by it.

Lets look at a few quotes that capture some of these ideas:

1. Captain Jean-Luc Picard (played by Patrick Stewart):
Time is a companion that goes with us on a journey. It reminds us to cherish each moment, because it will never come again. What we leave behind is not as important as how we have lived (from the film "Star Trek: Generations).

2. Paul Bowles:
… we get to think of life as an inexhaustible well. Yet everything happens only a certain number of times, and a very small number, really. How many more times will you remember a certain afternoon of your childhood, some afternoon that's so deeply a part of your being that you can't even conceive of your life without it? Perhaps four or five times more. perhaps not even that. How many more times will you watch the full moon rise? Perhaps twenty. And yet it all seems limitless.

3. Will Rogers:
Half our life is spent trying to find something to do with the time we have rushed through life trying to save.

4. Steve Jobs (American Entrepreneur Apple co-Founder, b.1955)
Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

5. Sir Noel Coward (In Blithe Spirit)
Time is the reef upon which all our frail mystic ships are wrecked

Poodwaddle.com [poodwaddle.com] is an interesting website that allows you to create a world clock on your website. Here is an example from Peter Russel's website The Spirit of Now [peterussell.com]

Finally, here are two pieces of film taken in 1974 [youtube.com] and 1994 [youtube.com] of Pink Floyd playing “Time”. I think these guys are musical geniuses and their music has evolved to flow with time.

Why do we love photography?

One reason must be that we try to grab the now, and hold onto it, because time is a fleeting, slippery fish. We realise a moment just in time for it to flash past into the distance, gone forever except in our fading memories.
I talk to my Dad knowing that within a year or two it will be impossible, and each word becomes more precious by the day. The bittersweet enjoyment that our final conversation approaches with unstoppable finality.
