Part 1 of Sobotka, an agricultural town in Northern Bohemia

Sobotka [] is a small town west of Mladá Boleslav not far from Jičín. It falls within the Hradec Králové region region and is not far from the beautiful forested Cesky Raj (Bohemian Paradise) sandstone hills.

Sobotka was founded in 1498 as a market village. It has a Renaissance town hall with a bower reconstructed in the Empire style. The most dominant feature is the Gothic-Renaissance church of St. Mary Magdalena almost in the centre of the tow. There are many fine traditional wooden clad houses and a beautiful old wooden Bell house near one of the other Churches.

Sobotka is the birthplace of the Czech poets Václav Šolc and Fráňa Šrámek []. The famous Czech writer Karel Čapek called Sobotka “a town of poets, schoolmasters and shoemakers” when he visited the poet Srámek. Fráňa Šrámek (19.1.1877– 1.8.1952) was a Czech anarchist, impressionist, and vitalist poet, novelist, and playwright. There is a permanent exposition in Sramek's house. The most famous house of Sobotka is certainly the half-timbered Solcuv statek of 1811 which houses a gallery. The two-storey house is the family house of the poet V. Šolc.

Key attractions near the town are 1, the Gothic castle Hrad Kost [] owned by the brothers Pio and Giovanni Kinsky dal Borgo. and 2, the Humprecht Chateau [].
