Kinetic Sculpture Race (teaser)

The other day I stumbled upon a website that mentioned the American Visionary Arts Museum in Baltimore hosts an annual sculpture race through our fair city. As it turns out the even runs through my neighborhood every year and I never even knew it existed. The premise - race man powered sculptures through a 15 mile course spread throughout the city - is about as absurd as you can get and thus uniquely Baltimorish. This year, I only made it to the mud pit obstacle, but you better believe that next year; I'll have photos from most of event. Come back tomorrow for some more of the sculptures.

Here is just an inkling about how proffesional this entire event is. This is the official “clock” for the obstacle course. It's roughly 2 minutes, give or take.

Here is the mud pit with it's clean up crew giving it one last go over before the festivities begin. It's two steps, each about 6 inches high.

Before the sculptures could go through it, it had to be tested with volunteers from the audience.

This little kid didn't want to leave.

Finally here is a teaser of one of the sculptures. This was the longest sculpture and performed an “transformation” shortly before this photo was taken.

Wow...never seen or heard of anything comparable. What tremendous fun! Some things have to be seen to be believed...this photoblog takes us all places.
